Camp Catalpa and Lake Reba Day One

For Ecology lab today, our class drove to Camp Catalpa at Richmond, Kentucky to observe the species of trees. Today was only an introduction; however, next time we will learn how to sample. Although we went on a rainy day, I had so much fun learning about the kinds of trees available in that area.  I also enjoyed watching Lake Reba, which is a lake that borders Camp Catalpa.

Trees and shrubs observed:

  • Catalpa
  • Mistletoe
  • Honey Suckle
  • Rough Leaf Dogwood
  • Hackberry
  • Hedge Apple = Trunk of the tree is orange at the bottom.
  • Shag Bark Hickory
  • Multiflora Rose
  • Sugar Maple
  • Shingle Oak
  • Chinese Privet
  • Snag= Just a dead tree. But it has many important benefits such as protection for wildlife.
We also had to record the following information:
  1. Date
  2. Time
  3. Weather
  4. Name of group members
  5. Place name in general
  6. Site name if your group did a sub site.
  7. Brief description of your methods.
  8. Your own observation.
